History

Between the 19th and 20th centuries, the beach was completely open and characterised by sand dunes naturally shaped by the wind and the movement of the sea.

Versilia’s mild climate, enhanced by the sheltering embrace of the Apuan Alps, crowned the primitive and unspoilt beauty of this place.

Raffaello Battelli, an enterprising merchant of marble handicrafts and the grandfather and great-grandfather of the current owners, built the villa in Motrone, close to the sea and the pinewood.

The origins

The Marina gradually became home to new families, trattorias and shops, while horse-drawn carriages brought holidaymakers from Pietrasanta to the seaside. This simple and spontaneous world changed in 1914 with the arrival of the electric tramway, which gave a boost to tourism but marked the end of a romantic era, later interrupted by the First World War.

In 1920, Arturo Battelli turned the villa into a guesthouse, starting a business that would be passed down from generation to generation. During the Second World War, the building first served as German headquarters and later as an American hospital; it narrowly escaped destruction and was fortunately spared.

A story since 1946

After Arturo Battelli’s death, in 1946 his daughter Valeria took over the running of Pensione Battelli and, with the support of her mother, quickly learned the art of hospitality. In the following years, a new building was added to accommodate a greater number of guests.

Valeria worked at the hotel with Massimo until 2010. Through her live the memories of family and a tradition shaped by commitment, hospitality and dedication.

Since 2017, she has entrusted us with the task of carrying this wonderful adventure forward.
